REVIEW: American Dreamer - A Witty and Heartfelt Take on the Cost of Happiness

Writer: Jenna CockburnJenna Cockburn

Inspired by a true story featured on This American Life, Paul Dektor’s American Dreamer follows Phil Loder (Peter Dinklage), a twice-divorced, struggling economics professor whose dream of homeownership remains painfully out of reach. That is, until he stumbles upon an extraordinary opportunity - a deal with Astrid Finnelli (Shirley MacLaine), a wealthy, childless widow nearing the end of her life. She’s offering her grand estate for a shockingly low price, but as Phil soon realizes, the arrangement comes with unforeseen complications, challenging his perception of the American dream.

Dinklage and MacLaine are a stellar pairing, effortlessly delivering sharp, curmudgeonly banter while also infusing their characters with warmth and resilience. Their dynamic gives the film its heart, making it impossible not to root for them. Dinklage brings charm and relatability to Phil, while MacLaine’s signature comedic edge is as sharp as ever. A sly reference to past lives nods to MacLaine’s well-known spiritual musings, adding an extra layer of wit.

The supporting cast - Matt Dillon, Danny Glover, Danny Pudi, and Kim Quinn - each add their own flair, enriching the film’s lively and unpredictable energy. Combined with a mix of physical comedy and daring antics, American Dreamer balances humour and heart with ease.

Despite its undeniable charm, the film has a few narrative gaps and unnecessary subplots that may leave audiences baffled and confused. Still, Dektor’s direction is filled with empathy, guiding the film toward deeper themes of happiness, ambition, and the loneliness that can drive life-changing choices. Even with its flaws, American Dreamer delivers an entertaining and thoughtful exploration of what we truly need to feel fulfilled.
