REVIEW: Only Fools and Horses the Musical | UK Tour 2024 | Edinburgh Playhouse

BONJOUR! As a fan of classic British television, I was buzzing to be invited along to the Edinburgh Playhouse for the press night of Only Fools and Horses the Musical during its 2024 UK tour. The original show, featuring the unforgettable antics of Del Boy and Rodney, is a beloved staple in British pop culture. Seeing it come to life on stage was an absolute joy!

The Musical's Premise: A Nostalgic Journey

Only Fools and Horses the Musical transports audiences to the bustling streets of Peckham, following the exploits of Del Boy Trotter, his brother Rodney, and their grandfather. This musical captures the heart of the original series, blending utter hilarity with lively musical numbers. Each song reflects the ups and downs of the Trotters and co in a way that resonates with anyone familiar with their story.

As someone who grew up watching the series, it was heartening to see the dynamic between characters expertly realised on stage. Del Boy’s (Sam Lupton) cheeky charm and Rodney’s (Tom Major) awkwardness were perfectly portrayed, transporting us back to the unforgettable moments we loved from the TV show.

The Cast: Alright Dave?!

The amazing cast showcased remarkable talent from the very start. Lupton's portrayal of Del Boy was exceptionally funny, expertly balancing comedic timing with genuine emotion. The chemistry with Major as Rodney was evident, making their interactions feel authentic and nostalgic.

Supporting characters brought additional layers to the story. Paul Whitehouse as Uncle Albert was a standout, his quirky humour delighted the audience and evoked fond memories for many. The ensemble cast contributed significantly to the comedic moments, ensuring that laughter flowed consistently throughout the show.

The Music: Lovely Jubbly!

The musical features the infamous theme song that we all know and love, and from toe-tapping melodies to witty lyrics, each song adds depth to the narrative. One particularly memorable number explored the highs and lows of Del's get-rich-quick schemes, leaving the audience in stitches while also emphasizing the unpredictability of his plans.

The Production: Triffic!

The production quality of this musical was superbly executed. The set design transitioned smoothly from the vibrant markets of Peckham to Del Boy’s iconic flat, maintaining the show's pace and energy. Each scene shift felt seamless, allowing the audience to immerse themselves in the unfolding drama.

Attention to detail in lighting and sound complemented the action beautifully, not only enhanced the comedy but also intensified emotional connections like those that fans have with the characters.

The Audience's Reaction: Cushty!

The energy in the audience was palpable throughout the performance. Laughter echoed from all corners of the auditorium, enhancing the overall experience. Spontaneous applause erupted after several scenes, showcasing how invested the audience were in the characters and storyline.

It was a joy to share the experience with fellow fans, exchanging chuckles and reminiscing about favourite moments from the original show. Did Del Boy fall through the bar?!

Final Thoughts: He Who Dares, Wins!

Whether you're a longtime fan or new to the Trotter family’s shenanigans, Only Fools and Horses the Musical is an exhilarating experience that beautifully captures the essence of the beloved TV series. With its brilliant blend of humour, engaging music, and stellar performances, it guarantees an unforgettable night out, so grab your tickets because you know it makes sense!
