"It's sexy, it's sassy, and it's razzmatazzy!"

The iconic musical Chicago made its way to the Edinburgh Playhouse as part of its UK tour, and it did not disappoint. From the moment the curtain rose, the energy was electric, capturing the essence of 1920s Chicago, with its glitz, glamour, and gritty tale of crime and scandal.

The cast delivered standout performances, with Faye Brookes (known for Coronation Street) bringing a dazzling and dynamic presence to the role of Roxie Hart. She embodied the character’s wit and ambition, and her vocal performance was a true highlight, particularly in songs like "Roxie" and "Me and My Baby."

Brenda Edwards, best known for her TV presenting, brought a fierce and commanding presence to the role of the manipulative Mama Morton. Her rendition of “When You’re Good to Mama” was sultry and full of power, while her chemistry with the rest of the cast anchored the show’s tension and drama.

Kevin Clifton, famed for his Strictly Come Dancing achievements, was a brilliant Billy Flynn. His suave, confident demeanor and impeccable dance skills shone through, adding an extra layer of charm and humor to the character. His performance of “All I Care About” was smooth and stylish, making the audience swoon.

The choreography, a crucial element in Chicago, was flawless. The Fosse-inspired routines were sharp, sensual, and executed with precision. Every movement felt intentional, amplifying the show’s themes of seduction, betrayal, and manipulation.

The orchestra also deserves special mention. Their seamless accompaniment brought the jazz-infused score to life, ensuring the music complemented the onstage action. The set, though minimalistic, was an effective backdrop, with the spotlight always on the performers.

Overall, Chicago at the Edinburgh Playhouse was an outstanding experience. The cast, including Faye Brookes, Brenda Edwards, and Kevin Clifton, brought their A-game, and the show’s high energy and timeless story kept the audience thoroughly entertained. Whether you’re a fan of the musical or new to the world of Roxie, Velma, and Billy, this production is a must-see.
