REVIEW: The 11th International Scottish Tattoo Convention 2024 | Edinburgh

As a lover of tattoos, but not having any myself (weird I know), attending the 11th International Scottish Tattoo Convention was an experience I had been eagerly awaiting for months. This year's event featured local talents alongside renowned artists from across the globe. With an exciting lineup of entertainment, music, and, of course, numerous inking opportunities, the convention truly was a feast for the senses.

Arriving at the Venue

Stepping into the O2 Academy felt like entering a vibrant world filled with colours and stories. Wandering around, the air was thick with the smell of ink and the familiar buzzing of machines and excitement as I admired the beautifully decorated booths showcasing artists from not just the UK but also from places like Spain, Italy, and the USA. Each artist showcased their unique styles, making it clear that I was about to witness some incredible talent.

The Talent Showcase

A highlight of the convention was the talent showcase, where artists demonstrated their skills live. It was fascinating to watch these professionals in action. Watching them transform a blank canvas into an awe-inspiring piece in real-time was nothing short of mesmerizing.

The Variety of Styles

The variety of tattoo styles on display was impressive. From traditional Celtic designs to cutting-edge geometric patterns, I was particularly captivated by a booth dedicated to watercolour tattoos. The tattoos looked like they belonged in an art gallery, with vibrant colours blending seamlessly together and seeming to flow on the skin.

In contrast, the intricately detailed black-and-grey pieces told compelling stories without relying on colour. One artist's work featured a hauntingly beautiful skull that played with light and shadow, demonstrating both precision and depth. It was hard not to admire the hours of work that went into such craftsmanship.

Live Entertainment

Throughout the day, both artists and attendees celebrated this incredible art form with awards given for different styles of tattoos as well as the best tattoos from the weekend. As the day unfolded, the excitement reached new heights with music and performances from contortion to burlesque, the atmosphere was electrifying.

A Universal Language

A surprising highlight was the sense of community. I met fellow tattoo enthusiasts, sharing our stories and experiences. One attendee travelled from Spain specifically for the event! It was heartwarming to realise that the passion for tattoos is a universal language, transcending borders and backgrounds.

Final Thoughts

The 11th International Scottish Tattoo Convention was much more than an event; it was an experience that showcased the power of artistry and connection. Whether you're contemplating your first tattoo or are a seasoned collector, attending conventions like this can reignite your passion for ink.
