REVIEW: Timestalker | Edinburgh International Film Festival 2024

"A fun frolic in the world of the wacky and wicked."

UK PREMIERE AT EDINBURGH INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

GENRE: Comedy, Drama, Fantasy, Romance

SYNOPSIS: Hapless Agnes repeatedly falls for the wrong guy, dies a grim death, and is reincarnated a century later. As she experiences romantic misfortune through different eras of history, Agnes seeks to avoid repeat mistakes and finally break the cycle.

Doomed to love and die forever, Timestalker tells the story of Agnes (Alice Lowe) and her multiple lives and reincarnations as she continues to fall in love with the same man, Alex (Aneurin Barnard). Time after Time (1688, 1793, 1847, 1940, 1980, and 2117 in fact), Agnes meets her demise trying to save this ominous outsider. Whereas in life after life, the same people interject, vying for Agnes’ affection.

The film explores the theme of love and obsession, revolving around toxic relationships and the rise of fuckboy culture. A fatal attraction. A tale as old as time…let’s hope not!

With a modest budget, this independent production impresses with makeup and costumes as the film travels through the centuries, allowing the cast to craft their timeless characters.

A madcap mashup of sci-fi, horror, thriller, comedy, and romance, Timestalker is a fun frolic in the world of the wacky and wicked.

EDINBURGH INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

A revitalised Edinburgh International Film Festival (EIFF) will run from August 15 to August 21, 2024.

Spanning 7 days, the relaunched EIFF will honour 70+ years of festival history, showcasing the very best talent in filmmaking in a re-energised format that is rooted in a local Scottish context whilst embracing the international diversity of creative expression. The programme will launch on Wednesday 10 July at 5pm, with tickets on sale Thursday 11 July at 12noon.

EIFF is poised to accelerate the discovery of new talent through the inauguration of two major competitions, The Sean Connery Prize for Feature Filmmaking Excellence and The Thelma Schoonmaker Prize for Short Filmmaking Excellence, with significant prize-money awarded to the filmmakers.

The EIFF’s August fixture now runs in parallel to a host of creative festivals taking place in Edinburgh, including Edinburgh International Festival and the renowned Edinburgh Festival Fringe, which sells millions of tickets to cultural connoisseurs from around the world. The EIFF will encourage general audiences, film buffs and industry professionals to make the trip this summer to Edinburgh, which is universally recognised as a place of beauty, history, discovery and adventure.

Helmed by Festival Director Paul Ridd and Festival Producer Emma Boa, the team aims to create a world-class showcase for independent film and filmmaking talent. Former Acquisitions Executive Ridd is supported by an expanding Board, including Chair, Andrew Macdonald of DNA Films, producer of the iconic Edinburgh-based film Trainspotting, and Amy Jackson, producer of last year’s BAFTA award- winning indie, Aftersun. EIFF 2024 is supported by Screen Scotland.
